San Franciscans love to escape.
This is a city where street festivals dominate, going to Burning Man is the norm, and multiple identities are embraced. We explore the lines where reality and fantasy meet, and the inspiration behind escapism in the arts. Where do we go when we escape? What happens when we come back? And can our fantasies help us decipher reality? Our theme for the next Art | Song salon is around Escapism.
On Thursday, April 3rd, Cindy Shih Artist and curator, will introduce her own work (http://www.cindyshihart.com/), as well as that of esteemed Bay Area surrealist painter Sandra Yagi Art (http://sandrayagi.com/) whose work depicts a dark, fantastical world in classical, contemporary aesthetics. Her work has been featured and represented in various galleries across the United States, as well as in the collections of celebrities such as Axl Rose, Ben Stiller, Cesar Chavez, and Ed Ruscha.
We are also excited to present the work of San Francisco illustrator, Chris Koehler (http://www.chriskoehler.com/) who will show his process and work around the same theme, through his personal perspective and narrative. Carol Chen, http://carolchendesign.com/illustration.html a Bay Area illustrator and graphic designer, will be leading a collaborative art experience during the event.
Jessica Wan, soprano, (http://www.jessicawan.com/) and Tim Eischens, piano, will present the theme through music by Franz Schubert, Samuel Barber, and William Bolcom, and Ennio Morricone. Each song has been carefully selected, and is intended to be enjoyed tangentially with the visual art pieces to inspire discussion around the various takes on the theme. We hope you will join us to share your perspective.
